This is the photo of an egg-laying hen at the end of her laying life.
Her emaciated, exhausted appearance is typical of all hens at the end of their productive life.
This particular hen was rescued; but
most commercial laying hens (including free range) are slaughtered at only 72 weeks of age, because, as their egg production drops, they are not considered profitable enough to keep alive.
