The strange case of smoking animals, tobacco companies and research - Part I

British Prime Minister Tony Blair recently said that he would sign a public petition in support of animal testing in research. And the ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, almost as if in reply, claimed: “Animal Tests Are Unreliable and Cruel”.

The debate over animal research has never been as public and centre stage as it is now.

There are both medical and ethical reasons to ban animal testing. Most people are mainly interested in the medical aspect, so I’ll focus on that here.

First of all, it’s no good to say that animal research is essential because researchers say so. People in the biomedical field are part of animal research, have a vested interest in it, and therefore their views are biased in favour of it. So it’s important that the public, who after all have to bear the consequences of it (and in many cases pay for it through taxation as well as by buying its products), make up their own mind.

Animal research is unreliable in the extreme. Let’s analyze one particularly important and significant example, before giving general arguments to back it up.

Smoking and cancer

The link between smoking and lung cancer was discovered by the British scientist Sir Richard Doll in the 1950s, by means of a study of human lung cancer patients in twenty London hospitals. He used the epidemiological method, i.e. the statistical study of diseases in human populations. The practical application to medicine of this all-important discovery had been hindered and delayed by animal research. Why?

First, because animal experiments had previously failed to demonstrate this link and they had ruled it out. Medical researchers were dismissive of Doll’s discovery. They had already tried to trigger cancer in animals using tobacco tar but had failed, they pointed out. Only later was it shown that their experimental procedures contained serious errors.

And then, even after Doll’s theory was published, animal researchers tested it by trying to reproduce the carcinogenic effects of smoking in animals. Some of this animal research was funded (you may guess) by tobacco manufacturers. Look at what they said: "No clearcut case against cigarette smoking has ever been made despite millions spent on research ...The longer these tests go on, the better our case becomes." (Phillip Morris, 1968)

Smoking beagles

It took 50 years to induce lung cancer in laboratory animals forced to breathe tobacco smoke (remember those pictures of rows of smoking beagles with cigarettes fixed in their masks?), thus delaying the health warning to humans and resulting in millions more unnecessary deaths.

In the end, it was the so-called British doctors study, a prospective clinical trial which ran from 1951 to 2001, that provided convincing statistical proof that tobacco smoking increased the risk of lung cancer. Doll’s study has provided the foundation for all other research into the impact of smoking cigarettes on health. It has arguably helped to save millions of lives.

This was a particularly important discovery, because it shows the role of lifestyle in cancer prevention (it actually paved the way to other discoveries linking cancer and diet) and, as we know, prevention is better than cure. There is here an analogy between the animal research lobby and the tobacco manufacturer's lobby, an analogy that goes beyond the fact that in this case they formed an “unholy alliance”.

Some smoking experiments on animals, intended to disprove its link with lung cancer and to give smoking the okay, were financed by cigarette companies. The analogy goes beyond this “unholy alliance” because both lobbies (animal experimentation and tobacco manufacturers) put the interest in their own self-preservation above public health.

ANTI-SMOKING MOVEMENT "BLOWING SMOKE" ?

The following link leads us deeper into the "Smoking-causes-lung-cancer~Or does it?" conundrum. This is the link to the publication of a German study in an apparently legitimate medical journal that states lung cancer and colon cancer are due strictly to Darwinian selection.

http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/70/17/6797.abstract

Hmmm.

This jogged my memory about reading a few months ago about a British clinical study of smokers, of non-smokers regularly exposed to second-hand-smoke and of non-smokers who were not subjected to second hand tobacco smoke. The study's objective was to determine if lung cancer was caused by smoking or genetic factors.

This study's conclusions were the same as the German study:

No statistically significant connection between tobacco smoking or secondary exposure to lung cancer.

So there ARE clinical trials that seem to chop the anti-smoking movement off at the knees.

Here's another link about nicotine to further confuse the issue:

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread484571/pg1

It's all just very strange. Suddenly we who not so long ago were defined as "victims seduced into addiction by dastardly tobacco companies" are being shamed, hounded and then TAXED disproportionately because we continue to smoke cigarettes.

(By strange contrast, the right to be a morphine addict is supported by tax dollars in methadone clinics all over. How weird is that?)

The evidence --clinical evidence--justifying this brutal anti-smoking campaign is questionable according to MY family history.

Most of my relatives are or were pretty heavy tobacco users. NO incidence of lung cancer or facial or bone or throat cancer in the past 4 generations. Average age of death probably 80+ years, with a few living into mid-90s and over 100 and dying, as they say, of old age. Predisposition to cancer of kidney, colon and heart attack--and dying of old age.

I've smoked 40 years. About a pack a day, menthol, going to light cigarettes around age 30.
Further, I was an acute asthmatic as a child. (Again, a family early childhood predisposition that cleared up when I became a teenager).
X-rays of my lungs when I was about 45 led the doctor to ask if I was a smoker or not, (I had said I was), that he couldn't tell by looking at my chest xrays.

I smoke 100% natural menthol cigarettes now (for the past 3 years). I don't have a cough. I don't have breathing problems. I have recently come to believe I have a goiter due to hypothyroidism (genetic), but I haven't been to a doctor in 15 years, so I don't know for sure. I don't take medications for anything, but I do take vitamins on and off.

I do have a (genetic predisposition) to high blood pressure, so I gave up caffeine some years back. I wish I could give up overeating...lol. I'm about 40 pounds overweight ...arghh..!

Now THERE is a problem that has a direct link!!

Check out the links and to all,
kindest regards and thanks for reading my comment!

Desktop as a service (DaaS) is a cloud computing offering in which a third party hosts the back end of a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployment.
With DaaS, desktop operating systems run inside virtual machines on servers in a cloud provider's data center. All the necessary support infrastructure, including storage and network resources, also lives in the cloud. As with on-premises VDI, a DaaS provider streams virtual desktops over a network to a customer's endpoint devices, where end users may access them through client software or a web browser.
How does desktop as a service work?
DaaS architecture is multi-tenant, and organizations purchase the service through a subscription model -- typically based on the number of virtual desktop instances used per month.
In the desktop-as-a-service delivery model, the cloud computing provider manages the back-end responsibilities of data storage, backup, security and upgrades. While the provider handles all the back-end infrastructure costs and maintenance, customers usually manage their own virtual desktop images, applications and security, unless those desktop management services are part of the subscription.
Typically, an end user's personal data is copied to and from their virtual desktop during logon and logoff, and access to the desktop is device-, location- and network-independent.
VDI vs. DaaS
Desktop as a service provides all the advantages of virtual desktop infrastructure, including remote worker support, improved security and ease of desktop management.
Further, DaaS aims to provide additional cost benefits. Deploying VDI in-house requires a significant upfront investment in compute, storage and network infrastructure. Those costs have decreased, however, thanks to the emergence of converged and hyper-converged infrastructure systems purpose-built for VDI.
With DaaS, on the other hand, organizations pay no upfront costs. They only pay for the virtual desktops they use each month. Over time, however, these subscription costs can add up and eventually be higher than the capital expenses of deploying on-premises VDI.
Additionally, some advanced virtual desktop management capabilities may not be available for certain DaaS deployments, depending on the provider.
